Tarragona is a port city located in northeast Spain on the Costa Daurada by the Mediterranean Sea. Founded before the fifth century BC, it is the capital of the Province of Tarragona, and part of Tarragonès and Catalonia. The Roman ruins of Tarraco have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Tarragona Amphitheatre is a Roman amphitheatre built in the 2nd century AD and could house up to 15,000 spectators. It was built at the end of the 1st century AD and the start of 2nd century AD, facing the sea. After Christianity became the official religion of the empire, the amphitheatre lost its original functions. During the following years some of the building’s stones were used to build a basilica, tombs were excavated in the arena and funerary mausoleums were annexed to the church.

History in Spanish: https://www.lugaresconhistoria.com/la-mussara-tarragona

Tradition claims that the town was abandoned during the last century due to a phylloxera epidemic. Although vineyards are the base of the economy in this part of the Baix Camp region, the reality is that its depopulation was more prosaic: it was the lack of water that put a stop to agriculture there. The two water wells did not provide enough water and it was this that was the beginning of the end.

Another factor that contributed to La Mussara´s depopulation was real estate speculation that sought to build an urbanisation in the area. Slowly the residents started leaving and by 1961 the village was abandoned entirely. Fog is also a constant factor in La Mussara, lending a somewhat ghostly tone to the eight dilapidated buildings that are preserved there on the top of the mountain, over 1,000 metres high.
