Getting Ready for Summer at Mas Baget
This time of year is all about getting ready.
There’s no single big job, just a long list of small and not-so-small ones that slowly bring the whole place back to life after winter. Bit by bit, things come together. Spaces open up. Corners get cleared. And the house starts to feel ready again.
The biggest job has been the pool.
We emptied it completely, which always feels slightly alarming at first, seeing it bare and exposed. But it gave us the chance to properly sort it out. Broken tiles have been fixed, edges cleaned up, and at the far end we’re laying a new patio area. It’s going to make a big difference, a proper space to sit, dry off, and enjoy the sun. New sunbeds are ready and waiting for when it’s finished and the pool is refilled.
Elsewhere, it’s been a lot of hands-on work across the land.
There’s been weeding, strimming and general clearing, opening up paths and making everything feel looked after again. Around the bungalows we’ve cut everything back and tidied up, making the spaces feel lighter and more welcoming. It’s simple work, but it transforms how everything feels.
The vegetable garden is in too.
Beds prepared, seeds and plants in the ground, and the first signs of growth already showing. It’s always a good moment, that shift from empty soil to something starting. In a few weeks it will be full again.
At the front of the house, the picnic tables have had some attention. Sanded back and treated with linseed oil, they’ve come up beautifully. They look solid again, ready for long lunches, shared meals and the usual mix of food, wine and conversation that gathers there over the summer.
We’ve also put up new lights across the front of the house. A simple change, but one that makes a difference in the evenings. As the days get longer and the nights warmer, those lights will come into their own.
Round the back, work has started on another patio area just outside the door. It’s been cleared, levelled and is slowly taking shape. Like everything else, it’s a work in progress, but you can already see how it will be used.
What’s made all of this possible, as always, is the people.
There’s been a steady flow of friends and volunteers coming through, rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in. Some stay a few days, some longer. Everyone helps. Jobs get shared, meals get cooked, and the work somehow feels lighter for it. There’s a good rhythm to it, work during the day, then sitting down together in the evening, tired but satisfied.
It’s not polished. It’s not perfect. But it’s real, and it’s coming together.
There’s still plenty to do, but the shape of the summer is starting to appear. The pool will soon be full again. The garden will grow. The tables will fill. The lights will come on.
And Mas Baget will be ready.
